UPVC Door & Window Repairs

UPVC and composite door repair is Martin's specialism, and it is the work he is called out for more than anything else. A door that will not lock, needs lifting to close, or has a handle that has gone slack is usually suffering from a failed multi-point gearbox or a dropped hinge - not from a problem that requires a whole new door.

In short

KMG Locksmiths repairs UPVC and composite doors and windows across Skelmersdale and West Lancashire, including dropped doors, misaligned frames, failed multi-point gearboxes, broken handles and seized cylinders. Most doors are repaired rather than replaced, which costs a fraction of a new door.

The industry default is often to quote for a complete replacement, which runs into hundreds or even thousands of pounds. In the majority of cases the failed component can be identified, sourced and replaced on the same visit for a fraction of that cost, and the door goes back to working properly.

Dropped and misaligned doors

A door drops when its hinges wear or its frame moves, which is common on older and heavier doors and on properties where the building has settled. The symptoms are familiar: the door catches on the frame, needs lifting to lock, or the locking points no longer line up with the keeps.

The fix is to re-hang and re-align the door properly rather than to force it or plane it down. Toe-and-heeling the glass and adjusting the hinge positions restores the door's geometry, and the door locks smoothly again without any material being removed.

Failed multi-point gearboxes

The multi-point gearbox is the mechanism inside the door edge that drives the locking points. When it fails, the handle goes slack, the door will not lock at all, or it locks but the key will not turn. This is the single most common fault on doors that are fifteen to twenty-five years old.

Gearboxes are replaceable on their own. Martin carries the common patterns on the van and can usually swap one in a single visit. Where a gearbox is not a stock item, he will source the correct part for your door rather than fitting something that almost fits.

Handles, cylinders and hardware

Handles work loose, snap under force, or corrode - particularly on coastal properties at Southport and Ainsdale where salt air accelerates wear. Cylinders seize, become stiff, or fail when a key is forced.

Both are straightforward replacements, and it is worth upgrading the cylinder while the door is open. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder costs very little more than a basic replacement and removes the most common method used to break into UPVC doors.

Patio, French and bi-fold doors

Sliding and folding doors have their own mechanisms and their own failure modes. Patio doors come off their runners or fail to lock at the mid-point; French doors go out of alignment at the meeting stile; bi-fold doors develop problems with the top and bottom tracks.

These are repairable in most cases, though parts availability varies more than for standard doors. Martin will tell you honestly whether a repair is viable or whether the hardware has reached the end of its life.

Windows and conservatories

Window handles seize or snap, espagnolette mechanisms fail so the window will not close tightly, and conservatory doors develop the same faults as any other UPVC door. Window locks are also a common insurance requirement, and Martin fits them to specification.

As with doors, the mechanism can usually be replaced without touching the frame or the glass.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases it can be repaired. A door that will not lock is usually suffering from a failed gearbox, worn hinges or a dropped frame rather than anything wrong with the door itself. Replacing the failed component typically costs £90 to £180 fitted, against several hundred pounds or more for a new door.

This is usually thermal movement. The frame and the door contract at different rates as the temperature drops, so locking points that line up in summer no longer meet the keeps in winter. It is an adjustment job rather than a part failure, and once set correctly the door will lock reliably year-round.

Usually yes. Martin carries the common gearbox patterns, handles, hinges and cylinders on the van, so the majority of UPVC repairs are completed in a single visit. If your door needs a less common part, he will tell you what it is, what it costs, and when he can return.

Yes. Window handles, espagnolette mechanisms, hinges and stays are all repaired or replaced, and window locks can be fitted to satisfy insurance requirements. Conservatory doors and windows are covered too, as they use the same hardware as standard UPVC.
