Lock Replacement & Lock Changes

A lock needs replacing when it has failed, when the keys can no longer be trusted, or when the existing hardware no longer meets the standard an insurer requires. Whatever the reason, the job should leave you with a lock that works smoothly and keys you know are yours alone.

In short

KMG Locksmiths replaces and changes locks across Skelmersdale and West Lancashire, including cylinders, night latches, deadlocks, mortice locks and multi-point gearboxes. Every replacement lock comes with its own keys, and each one is tested on the door, carry a 12-month guarantee, and the price is agreed before work starts.

Martin changes locks on all door types - UPVC, composite, timber and aluminium - and will tell you whether a full replacement is genuinely needed or whether a cylinder swap solves the problem for considerably less money.

When a lock needs changing

The clearest cases are a failed lock and a lost key. If a key has been lost rather than mislaid - particularly if it was taken, or if the address is identifiable - the lock should be changed rather than hoped about.

Other triggers are less obvious. A lock that has become stiff or that needs jiggling to turn is on its way out. So is one where the key has started to feel loose, which usually means the pins or the barrel are worn.

Cylinder changes versus full lock replacement

On UPVC and composite doors, the lock is almost always a euro cylinder sitting in the door, and that cylinder can be replaced on its own in minutes. This is the cheapest route and the one that solves most problems.

Full lock replacement applies to night latches, mortice locks and older timber doors, where the whole mechanism is the lock. Even then, it is often the case that the lock body can be replaced while reusing the existing furniture.

Upgrading while you are changing

If a lock is being changed anyway, it costs very little more to fit something better. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder removes the most common method used to break into UPVC doors, and a British Standard BS3621 deadlock is what most insurers require on external timber doors.

Martin will explain the difference and let you decide, rather than automatically fitting the most expensive option.

What happens with your keys

Key cutting is not a service Martin offers. Every replacement lock arrives with its own set of keys from the manufacturer, and he tests each one on the door before he leaves, so you are not discovering a stiff key the next morning.

If you want additional spares beyond the set supplied, any key-cutting shop can copy them, there is nothing special about the keys a standard cylinder or deadlock uses. Where a lock uses a restricted or registered profile, which prevents unauthorised copies, he will explain how the system works and what a replacement key costs if one is ever lost.

Frequently asked questions

A standard euro cylinder change on a UPVC or composite door is typically £90 to £160 fitted, including the keys supplied with the new lock. A British Standard deadlock or a night latch on a timber door is usually £95 to £150, because the lock body itself is more substantial.

If you want to keep using the existing keys, that usually means re-keying rather than replacing - which is possible on some lock types but not all, and is often no cheaper than a straightforward replacement with new keys. Martin will tell you which option makes sense for your door.

Yes. Replacement locks fitted by KMG Locksmiths carry a 12-month guarantee covering the lock and the workmanship. If something fails within that period, Martin will return and put it right.

No. Key cutting is not a service Martin offers. Every new lock comes with its own set of keys from the manufacturer, and he tests each one on the door before leaving so you know they all work. If you want extra spares beyond the set supplied, any key-cutting shop can copy them.
