Smart Security Systems

An alarm that only makes a noise is not much use when nobody is home to hear it. The IQ range is a different proposition: a professionally specified security system that also tells you what is happening, when it happened, and who came in, on your phone, wherever you are.

The technology underneath

PowerG is the reason this works in a real house

Encrypted, two-way wireless

Every PowerG device communicates with the panel using AES-128 encryption with frequency hopping. A wireless sensor cannot be jammed or spoofed the way an unencrypted 433MHz device can.

Genuine long range

PowerG reaches further than conventional wireless and holds its signal through the thick walls and foil-backed insulation typical of older West Lancashire housing, which is where cheap wireless systems quietly fail.

Battery life measured in years

Devices report their battery level to the panel, so a low battery is flagged weeks in advance rather than discovered when the system fails to arm.

No re-wiring

Because the devices are wireless, a full system can be fitted to a finished house without lifting floors or chasing walls, which is what makes it viable in older properties.

Encrypted two-way wireless, AES-128, frequency hopping. Devices confirm they can hear the panel, and the link cannot be jammed by a cheap signal blocker.

Installation

From survey to handover

A security system is only as good as its installation. Every device is individually tested, every zone is programmed to how your household actually works, and you are shown how to run the system before Martin leaves.

  1. 01

    Survey and specification

Martin walks the property with you and works out what genuinely needs protecting: which doors and windows are reachable, where a motion detector would be triggered by a pet, where the panel should live so it is convenient but not on show. You get a written specification and a fixed price before anything is ordered.

  2. 02

    Supply and first fix

The IQ panel, PowerG sensors and any automation devices are supplied by KMG, sourced through authorised distribution. Where cabling is needed for a bell box, external sounder or the panel's power supply, it is run neatly and out of sight.

  3. 03

    Installation and commissioning

Devices are fitted, enrolled and individually tested, every contact opened and closed, every detector walked through its coverage pattern. Zones, partitions and user codes are programmed to how your household actually works, and the app is set up on your phone before Martin leaves.

  4. 04

    Handover and support

You are shown how to arm, disarm, part-arm and manage users, and given the installer code so you are never locked out of your own system. KMG remains the point of contact for the hardware it fits, and existing KMG customers get priority on any call-out.

Sensors & devices

What gets fitted, and where

A system is built from the devices a property actually needs, not from a fixed bundle. These are the device families KMG installs as part of an IQ system.

IQ wireless door and window contact sensor

Intrusion detection

Door & window contacts

Slim PowerG and S-Line contacts, including vanishing contacts that recess fully into the frame for a completely flush finish on heritage and high-end doors.

PowerG wireless motion detector with built-in camera

Interior protection

Motion detectors

Pet-immune passive infrared detectors with built-in cameras available, so the panel can show a disarm image of who entered and when.

IQ wireless glass break detector

Perimeter protection

Glass break detectors

Acoustic detectors that recognise the specific frequency of breaking glass, protecting ground-floor windows and glazed doors without wiring every pane.

PowerG wireless detector unit

Life safety

Smoke & heat detectors

Wireless smoke and heat detectors that report to the panel and to your phone, so a fire alert reaches you whether you are home or not.

PowerG Water Tile leak and freeze detector beside a leaking pipe

Property protection

Water & freeze detection

The PowerG Water Tile sits under a boiler, washing machine or sink and raises an alert at the first sign of a leak, before a small drip becomes a ceiling.

Brass smart door lock with keypad handle and Euro profile cylinder

Access & control

Smart locks & automation

PowerG and Z-Wave smart locks, lighting controls, thermostats and sockets, so the alarm system becomes the hub that runs the house.

UK double smart socket with Type G three-pin outlets

Automation

Smart sockets

Connected sockets that can be scheduled or triggered by events, turning a lamp on at dusk while you are away, or killing power to an appliance on a rule.

PowerG wireless keypad and remote control

Convenience

Keypads & remote controls

Additional PowerG keypads, remote fobs and expansion modules for second entry points, garages and outbuildings.

KMG Locksmiths now supplies and installs the IQ range from Johnson Controls, the manufacturer behind the Qolsys IQ Panel family and PowerG wireless technology. Martin is a locksmith first, which matters more than it sounds: security starts at the door, and he already spends his working life fitting the locks, cylinders and door hardware that a detection system is meant to sit behind.

Why a locksmith installs alarm systems

Most alarm systems are sold by a security company that has no involvement in the door they are protecting. That is backwards. The overwhelming majority of domestic burglaries in the UK are opportunistic, and they happen through a door that was either unlocked, left on the latch, or secured with a lock that failed. Detection is the second line of defence, not the first.

KMG Locksmiths comes at this from the other end. Martin fits the anti-snap cylinders, the BS3621 deadlocks and the door hardware first, because that is what stops someone getting in. The IQ system then covers what locks cannot: the patio door left open in summer, the window on a first-floor landing, the garage that is never checked, the smoke alarm nobody hears when the house is empty.

It also means one tradesman is responsible for the whole job. There is no argument between the locksmith and the alarm company about which one is at fault when something does not work, and no second contractor to schedule around.

PowerG, why the sensor technology matters more than the panel

The panel is the part people notice, but the wireless protocol underneath it is what decides whether a system works reliably in a real British house. Most budget wireless alarms use older unencrypted protocols on a narrow band, and the failure modes are predictable: the sensor in the back bedroom that drops off the network, the detector that eats batteries, the system that arms with a zone already in fault and does not say so clearly.

PowerG is a different class of technology. It uses encrypted two-way communication with frequency hopping, so the panel and each device confirm they can hear each other, and the link cannot be jammed by a cheap signal blocker. It also reaches further through solid walls, which matters in the older, thicker-walled properties common across West Lancashire.

For a takeover, replacing an ageing alarm in a house you already live in. PowerG is what makes the job viable without damage. Every device is wireless, so a full system can be fitted without lifting floors or chasing walls.

What a system actually looks like

A typical three-bedroom semi-detached house takes one day. The panel is fitted in a hallway or utility room where it is convenient to reach but not immediately visible from the front door. Door contacts go on the front and back doors and any external side access. A pet-immune motion detector covers the main through-route. A bell box goes on the front elevation.

Larger houses and commercial premises scale up from there, additional zones, more partitions so a garage or annexe can be armed independently, keypads at second entry points, and automation devices such as smart locks, lighting and sockets added to the same system rather than run as separate apps.

Every device is individually tested at commissioning: contacts opened and closed, detectors walked through their coverage pattern, the bell verified, and the app set up on your phone before Martin leaves. You are given the installer code so you are never locked out of your own system.

Choosing between the panels

The IQ range spans a genuinely wide price range, and the right answer depends on the property rather than on which model is newest. The IQ Panel 5 and the rest of the IQ5 Family are the current generation, built on the Qualcomm DragonWing processor with Android 14, faster, with a better camera for disarm images, and with a longer software support life ahead of it.

The IQ Panel 4 family remains fully supported and is often the sensible choice. It supports legacy wireless protocols as well as PowerG, which means an existing alarm's sensors can frequently be reused instead of replaced. On a takeover, that difference alone can pay for the new panel.

Where there is no need for a touchscreen at all, flats, rentals, or a panel hidden in a cupboard, the screen-free IQ5 NS and IQ4 NS do the same job for less money, controlled entirely from the app.

Martin will recommend the panel that fits the job and explain the trade-off, including when the cheaper option is the better one. The same principle applies here as to locks: the honest answer is sometimes the smaller invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and that is the main reason to choose a PowerG-based system. Because the sensors are wireless, a full system can be installed in a finished house without lifting floorboards or chasing walls. Most domestic installations are completed in a single day.

Not necessarily. The IQ Panel 4 supports legacy wireless protocols as well as PowerG, so in many cases existing sensors can be reused and only the panel and any missing devices are replaced. Martin will tell you honestly whether a takeover makes sense or whether starting fresh would be cheaper in the long run.

The IQ panels communicate over dual paths: LTE cellular and Wi-Fi. If the broadband drops, the panel falls back to the cellular connection and keeps reporting. This is a genuine advantage over alarm systems that rely on a phone line or broadband alone.

No. The hardware is yours and you can use the panel and the mobile app without any ongoing contract with KMG. If you want professional monitoring and a monitored response, that is a separate subscription arranged directly with a monitoring provider, and Martin will explain the options rather than push one.

Yes. The panel contains a backup battery and the sensors run on their own long-life batteries, so the system continues to work through a power cut. The doors themselves are unaffected, this is a detection system, not a locking system, so your normal keys and locks still work exactly as before.

The IQ range includes video doorbells and cameras that integrate with the panel, so alerts and footage appear in the same app as your alarm events. Ask Martin to include camera options in the specification if you want video as well as intrusion detection.

A typical three-bedroom semi-detached house with a panel, door contacts, a couple of motion detectors and a bell box starts at £600 supplied and fitted, rising with the number of devices, depending on how many devices are needed. Larger houses, commercial premises and automation devices increase that. You get a fixed written price after the survey.

The IQ range is professionally specified equipment from Johnson Controls, a major global security manufacturer, and installations can be configured to meet insurer requirements including confirmed alarm signalling. Martin will provide written specification details of what has been fitted so you can pass them to your insurer.
